One of the former
police officers acquitted of raping Louise Nicholas says he is ashamed of his
behaviour. Assistant Commissioner
Clint Rickards and former officers Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton were last
week cleared of rape charges, but have always admitted to consensual group
sex with the Rotorua woman - and other women - at a time when they were all
in relationships. But Craig Shipton
yesterday said his brother knew he had behaved immorally. "He admitted (to
me) he was morally ashamed of his behaviour, but it doesn't make it
illegal... most people have things they are ashamed of in their lives." During the trial,
Rickards' lawyer, John Haigh QC, said his client's behaviour had been
"morally reprehensible". A Nicholas family
spokesman yesterday said Louise Nicholas was "feeling as anyone would in
her situation". "She and the
Nicholas family just want to thank family and friends for their support and
the hundreds and hundreds of ordinary New Zealanders who sent cards and
letters of support." |
