Doubt cast on police accuser's evidence

The defence lawyer for suspended Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards is picking holes in the evidence being given by the woman who is accusing him of indecent assault.

Clint Rickards along with former policemen Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum are standing trial for kidnapping and indecent assault dating back to the 1980s in Rotorua.

Rickards' lawyer John Haigh QC claims there are so many discrepancies in the complainant's evidence that she cannot be believed. He says the statement she gave to police changed as she went along - she made things up and embellished the truth to make a case for herself. Mr Haigh says she failed to identify Mr Rickards in a photo because she did not know who he was.

The complainant says the alleged incident occurred about 22-years-ago and she has had difficulty remembering the details.
