Police assault trial continues

The defence lawyer for a former policeman facing an historical sexual assault complaint claims the complainant kept in contact with the three accused after the alleged incident.

Brad Shipton, Bob Schollum and suspended Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards are on trial for kidnapping and indecent assault dating back more than two decades.

Shipton's defence lawyer Bill Nabney claims the woman making the allegations kept in contact with Brad Shipton for several years after the date of the alleged incident, as her new phone number was found in his police notebook. Mr Nabney says in 1985, more than a year after the alleged incident, the complainant went to the Rotorua Police Station to see her then boyfriend who had been arrested, and when denied access she asked Brad Shipton to help her see him.

The woman says there is no way she would have given her number to Shipton after what had happened, and says she never saw Brad Shipton after the alleged indecent assault.
