Woman challenged in police trial

The woman who has accused an assistant police commissioner and two former officers of indecent assault has continued to give evidence in the High Court in Auckland.

Clint Rickards, Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton are on trial on charges of kidnapping and indecent assault in Rotorua in the mid 1980s.

Cross-examining the woman on Wednesday morning, lawyers for Shipton and Schollum focussed on details about how her evidence has changed since she first spoke to police in 2004.

This included how she got to the Rotorua house where she alleges she was sexually assaulted with a liquor bottle.

The defence also focussed on how Schollum had told her she must not tell anyone otherwise the safety of her and her family could be in jeopardy, something she had failed to tell police in her first conversation with them.

The lawyer for Schollum, Paul Mabey QC, accused the woman of embellishing her story to impress the jury.

She was also asked how she had no significant physical injuries that required her to see a doctor if she was handcuffed during the incident, so violently assaulted and had put up such a fight.

The woman said she has crystal clarity now about much of the crucial detail, but when police called her four years ago it was very difficult to recall incidents from 23 years ago.
