A surprise witness has been called at the trial of three men on historical indecent assault charges.

Suspended Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards is on trial for kidnapping and indecent assault along with former policemen Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton.

Former All Black Steve McDowell has taken the stand in defence of his friend Clint Rickards. Mr McDowell has confirmed evidence earlier today that Rickards had undergone major knee surgery and was in plaster and on crutches at the time of the alleged incident.

The complainant claims she never saw him in plaster or on crutches and that he regularly came into her work in plain clothes despite being a uniformed officer.

Brad Shipton's wife has also given evidence in her husband's defence. Sharon Shipton has told the court her husband grew a moustache in 1982 and did not shave it off until the mid 1990's.

The complainant earlier told the court she had a relationship with Shipton in late 1983 and early 1984 and he was clean shaven the entire time.

Mrs Shipton says that can not be the case as Shipton had a moustache for at least a decade and did not shave it off during that period. She also claims her husband went away from Rotorua for an entire month in February 1984, despite the complainant saying she was seeing Shipton two to three nights a week during that time.
