New Witness Casts Doubt On Alibi

The Crown has used a surprise witness to attempt to discredit an alibi for a former police officer accused of sexual offending in the 1980s.

Assistant Commissioner Clint Rickards and former officers Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum are accused of kidnapping and indecently assaulting a woman in Rotorua when she was 16-years-old.

Brad Shipton's wife has told the High Court in Auckland she and her husband were staying with a cousin in Wanganui for most of February 1984, part of the time the offending is alleged to have happened.

But the Crown has flown Mrs Shipton's cousin, Christine Filer, from Perth as a rebuttal witness.

She said she cannot recall a visit by the Shiptons in that month, or for that length of time.

Earlier Mrs Shipton broke down and wept when the Crown accused her of trying to influence her cousin's evidence.

The Crown will close its case this afternoon.
