Schollum Lawyer Closes Defence

A lawyer for one of the former police officers charged with indecent assault has attempted to distance his client from a defence witness painted as a liar.

Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards, and Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum, are accused of kidnapping and indecently assaulting a 16-year-old in the 1980s.

In his closing address at the High Court in Auckland this morning, Bob Schollum's lawyer Paul Mabey QC has referred to evidence from Brad Shipton's wife, who the Crown claimed was lying for her husband.

Mr Mabey told the jury Mrs Shipton has nothing to do with Bob Schollum's case.

He said there are too many inconsistencies in the complainant's story for the jury to be sure enough of the facts to convict his client.

The trial is drawing to a close with the jury expected to retire later today
