Jury retires in police assault trial

The jury at the police indecent assault trial has retired to consider its verdict after eight days of evidence.

Suspended Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards and former policemen Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum are standing trial for kidnapping and indecent assault dating back more than 20 years in Rotorua.

Justice Judith Potter told the jury they must concentrate only on the evidence in court and disregard anything they have heard in the media, or from other people.  She reminded them the men have each been charged separately and if they believed one of the accused is guilty, it does not necessarily mean the others are.

On Tuesday the Crown called two surprise witnesses to discount Brad Shipton's alibi that he was out of Rotorua for most of February 1984, when the alleged incidents are to have taken place.
