Deliberations continue in police sex case

The jury will continue its deliberations today, at the trial of the suspended assistant commissioner of police and two former colleagues.

Forty-six-year-old Clint Rickards, Brad Shipton, 49 and Bob Schollum, 54, are accused of indecently assaulting a 16-year-old with a bottle and kidnapping her in Rotorua between November 1983 and August 1984.

In his summing up in the High Court at Auckland, Justice Potter told jury members to set aside any views they may have about the Louise Nicholas case, which was held last year and in which the same men were acquitted of 20 charges including rape and sexual violation.

In the closing stages of the trial, the lawyer for Schollum, Paul Mabey QC told the jury that the evidence given by Sharon Shipton related to Schollum and not his client. Mrs Shipton was accused of lying for her husband.

The jury retired to consider its verdicts just before 1.30pm yesterday and was sent to a hotel for the night just before 10pm. Jury members will return to the court about 9am today to continue deliberations. The jury has six verdicts to reach, as each man faces one charge of kidnapping and one of indecent assault.
