Rickards facing more damaging conduct claims
NZPA

Suspended police Assistant Commissioner Clint Rickards could be forced out of the force by a new non-criminal claim that he had intercourse with a woman on the bonnet of a police car in 1983.

The claim was one of the "employment issues" being investigated by police, who refused to reinstate Mr Rickards after his acquittal on sex charges, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The paper said the investigation into police sex offending, described by Mr Rickards as a "shambles", was understood to have uncovered damaging allegations against him.

The allegations did not have a criminal element "but certainly, from a moral perspective, Mr Rickards is not going to want it getting out", the newspaper said.

Mr Rickards and former police colleagues Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum were found not guilty of historic kidnapping and indecent assault charges on Thursday.

He had been on suspension for three years and after the verdicts said he wanted to return to work as Auckland district commander as soon as possible.

His lawyer, John Haigh, QC, refused to comment about the claim of car bonnet sex.

A year ago the three men were found not guilty of sex charges against Louise Nicholas.

Shipton and Schollum are serving 8-½ and eight-year sentences respectively for the rape of a Mount Maunganui woman 18 years ago.

The car bonnet sex allegations could be used by the police to force Mr Rickards out, the newspaper said.

Police regulations prohibit disgraceful conduct tending to bring discredit to the police.
