However, a former MP says Mr
Rickards is the victim of a witch-hunt and should be allowed to return to his
job. It is not yet known whether Mr
Rickards, who has twice been acquitted on sex charges, will return to his
job. Auckland Mayor Dick Hubbard is
among those speaking out against Mr Rickards's reinstatement, saying he has
lost the public's confidence after lending his support to his co-accused, who
are convicted rapists. Former Alliance MP and media
commentator Willie Jackson says Mr Rickards's comments were inappropriate,
but says he has been acquitted and should be forgiven. Mr Jackson says Mr Rickards has
become the sacrificial lamb in the inquiry into police culture. Mr Rickards's lawyer, John Haigh,
says neither he nor his client will comment. |
