Protest march planned over acquittals
NZPA

A group of Wellington women plan to hold a march on Thursday to protest the acquittal of three men on historic sex charges.

Former policemen Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum, and Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards were acquitted by a jury last week on charges of kidnapping and indecently assaulting a then-16-year-old girl more than 20 years ago.

Last year the same three men were acquitted of historic sex charges against Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas. Shipton and Schollum are already in prison for raping a Mount Maunganui woman 18 years ago.

There has been a public outcry since that information was made public after court suppression orders were lifted.

The group of women organising the march handed out flyers containing suppressed information regarding the Nicholas' case last year.

One of the women, Emily Felicity Bailey, 29, was charged with breaching a suppression order over the flyers but the charges were withdrawn last week.

The march will take place on Thursday - which is International Women's Day - starting at 5.30pm from Civic Square.
