Recent cases show abuse of police power - Clark

Prime Minister Helen Clark

The Prime Minister says there is an abuse of power by police in recent court cases, including the acquittal of Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards.

Mr Rickards is fighting for his job back, now that he has been acquitted of sex charges against him in two trials.

A commission of inquiry into police conduct will be released soon and Helen Clark has hinted it could create a stir.

She says she can not comment on Mr Rickards' employment issues, but it is clear that nobody would condone the behaviour in which the officers were involved.
