Political leaders speak out against Rickards

The argument that it is untenable for Clint Rickards to keep his police job is gaining traction among the country's political leaders.

The suspended Auckland area commander and Assistant Police Commissioner has vowed to fight to get his jobs back after being acquitted of historical sex charges.

Prime Minister Helen Clark expressed her disapproval of Clint Rickards, saying she has doubts a teenager could consent to having group sex with policemen.

United Future leader Peter Dunne says Clint Rickards' behaviour has been disgraceful and resignation is the only honourable course of action. His view is shared by National's leader John Key who says it is very unlikely that after the last three years, New Zealanders would retain confidence in him. Mr Key says in his opinion, Clint Rickards should pack up his tent and move on.

The Greens' police spokesman Nandor Tanczos also doubts New Zealanders will have the necessary respect for him. He says Mr Rickards has been involved in activity which he believes is an abuse of his power.
