Protests planned for rape justice

Protesters will be marching in Auckland and Wellington on Thursday evening to demand changes to the way rape cases are dealt with.

A vigil is also planned in Christchurch.

There is anger following acquittals in the recent police sex trials, with organisers saying only 1% of rape cases result in convictions.  They say victims of rape are more on trial than the people being accused.

The protests are part of International Women's Day.

Wellington police station and the district court will be targeted in the march in the capital, and organiser Lenka Rochford says the idea is to support rape survivors who she says the justice system has failed.

Another organiser, Frances Martin, says society needs to stick up for women in what she calls sisterly solidarity.

Women are being encouraged to dress in black, marking an international awareness campaign tackling violence against women.
