Protesters burn effigy of police officer

Demonstrators burned an effigy of a police officer outside the High Court in Wellington during a march on Thursday marking International Women's Day.

Many of the almost 400 protesters carried posters with messages referring to the acquittal last week of three police officers on rape and kidnapping charges dating back to the 1980s.

Earlier they blocked the street outside Wellington Police Station, the doors of which were blocked by a line of female officers.

Things became heated after a young woman climbed the police station steps, saying she wanted to present a statement about abuse to police inside.

A similar protest was held in Auckland, where about 250 protesters marched peacefully down Queen Street.
