Parents want child centre re-opened

Parents of children at the Civic Child Care Centre which was suddenly closed on Thursday were seeking a legal course for its reopening yesterday.

The parents had signed a contract with the city council only this week, agreeing to a two weeks notice provision regarding the withdrawal of children. There was an obligation for the council to provide similar notice of closure, parents spokesperson Penny Mahy said.

Instead parents had been telephoned on Thursday evening and told not to take their children to the Cranmer Square centre yesterday. A letter was to follow, they were told.

This was not good enough, with many parents having insufficient time to make alternative arrangements before work again yesterday, Ms Mahy said.

The parents were given no reason for the sudden closure except that the Ministry of Education had revoked the centre's licence after receiving advice from the police. She had been delighted with the standard of care and was fearful of the difficulty in finding alternative care for her 1-year-old daughter.

A police spokesperson, Detective Inspector Brian Pearce, said yesterday the advice given to the ministry related to ongoing investigations at the centre since early this year.

Mr Pearce declined to comment on whether the investigations related to the earlier arrest of a male worker at the centre on child abuse charges.

Parents who wanted to know more should contact the police on Monday, Mr Pearce said.
