Notes from the television "20/20" Special Report on the Christchurch Civic Creche fiasco screened TV3, 6.30pm, Sunday 16 November, 1997.

Detective Eade had full responsibility for pursuing the investigation of the Creche case.

Detective Eade still believes there were at least 10 abusers, and over 80 children abused.

Parents of one child complainant withdrew from the case, after Detective Eade propositioned the mother.  (Identity is known)

Detective Eade had a relationship with at least two other mothers of complainants. Detective Eade would not comment further on these relationships.  (Identities are known)

One of main complainants admitted she had lied.   Detective Eade still believes that child has been abused, and that she is in denial.

Father of child who admitted lying, says that he "believed his child" when the child disclosed information to the sexual abuse team. He now continues to "believe his child" when his child says that she lied.   The child has been consistent with her story that she had lied for three years now.

Detective Eade said that he would not be surprised if all complainants withdrew their allegations at one time or another, but that would not mean they were not abused.

Detective Eade said "that he should of been on anti depressants during the time of the investigation"

Parent of one child who was a complainant, was considering withdrawing child from case, because of lack of objectivity of Detective Eade.  Persuaded to allow child to remain as witness after approach from Crown Prosecutor.  "Wishes he had not now"

Detective Eade was loner in police force, and resigned from the police nine months after the case.

Foreman of the jury was the minister who officiated at the wedding of the Crown Prosecutor.   There may be grounds for an appeal based on this fact that was not disclosed at the time of the trial.

Another jury member was a lesbian in a relationship with another woman. The juror's partner shared adjacent desks at work with the mother of a primary complainant.

The mother of the first complainant was:
A victim of sexual abuse herself
A counsellor specialising in sexual abuse
Her child did not make any disclosures in the investigation
She withdrew her child from the Creche and took him elsewhere.
She subsequently made allegations of sexual abuse against another male worker at another Creche.

Judith Ablett Kerr QC is about to petition for a free pardon for Peter Ellis.

Many of bizarre claims made by children (coffins, exhumation of Jesus Christ, murder etc) were not presented to the trial.

Mother of one child who disclosed abuse, managed to watch the video evidence of the disclosure.  She wished she had seen that evidence much sooner, as the process was "laughable". She would have withdrawn her child from the "hysteria" much sooner if she had known.

Arrest of Ellis was timed to coincide immediately before a public meeting to discuss possible abuse at the Creche.  One mother left the subsequent meeting because of the atmosphere of hysteria there.

At least 60 claims to the Accident Compensation Commission were made by parents associated with the Christchurch Creche.  At least $500,000 was paid out in compensation for alleged sexual abuse.
