I would be interested to know whether the Christian
Fundamentalist highly ranked police officer in Christchurch the time was in
charge of this case, and influenced Eade's mishandling of the investigation.
Inspector Brian Pearce, the gentleman to whom you refer, was the officer in
overall charge, but he had little direct effect on Det Colin Eade. I found
Pearce a likable man and not the fruitcake some have painted him. He did
afterwards defend everything the police did though, including his famous
appearance on Holmes where he invoked God and Patricia Bartlett.
Much closer to Eade was Det Sgt Bob Hardie, Eade's direct supervisor. Hardie
was just as off-the-planet as Eade. Hardie told me to my face that they were
going to arrest Ellis's mother next, on the grounds she danced on a table
somewhere. He was so incoherent I couldn't follow his line of reasoning.
