Ellis case
Possibly because of a widely-felt deep unease, the conviction of Christchurch
creche worker Peter Ellis on charges of sexual abuse of children refuses to
go away.
The case has come into prominence again after a television programme
investigation which revealed that a detective on the case had had affairs
with two of the mothers of the creche children and harassed a third.
If that were not bad enough, it was also shown that the detective had left
the police service after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder
which he suffered during the inquiry. Police have now opened an inquiry into
this conduct. But is a police inquiry enough in these circumstances? A
broader investigation seems warranted.
