Ellis move
NZPA

Christchurch: Convicted child abuser Peter Ellis wants to get out of jail on bail.

On Friday, lawyer Judith Ablett-Kerr, QC, said the Governor-General, Sir Michael Hardie Boys, had given permission for Ellis' case to go back to the Court of Appeal, in an historic move.

Yesterday, Mrs Ablett-Kerr said it would take some time to apply for bail because of legal procedures. However, she would contact Justice Minister Doug Graham to try other ways of gaining Ellis his liberty.

Yesterday was Peter Ellis' 40th birthday - and the anniversary of the day he was arrested six years ago and charged with abusing children at a creche.

At the weekend, Ellis' mother, Lesley, said her son had received many birthday cards already from well-wishers.
