Ellis team to seek inquiry

Lawyers working to free convicted child abuser Peter Ellis will apply for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into his case.

Ellis maintains he is innocent of the 13 convictions of child abuse at the Christchurch Civic Childcare Centre for which he was jailed more than five years ago.

Lawyer Judith Ablett-Kerr, QC, said yesterday that she spoke to Ellis at Christchurch's Rolleston Prison after the Appeal Court refused his bail application on Tuesday.

She confirmed they would petition Governor-General Sir Michael Hardie Boys for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into Ellis's case, as happened in Arthur Allan Thomas's case.

Mrs Ablett-Kerr could not confirm when the petition would be finalised, ``but you can be assured I will not allow the grass to grow under my feet''.
