Report clears crèche detective
by Alan Samson

A police internal report has cleared Detective Colin Eade of any wrongdoing in his investigation of the Christchurch crèche case.

Mr Eade had earlier admitted a relationship with one victim's mother and of propositioning another.

It was also reported that he was suffering psychological problems during some parts of his investigation.

The internal report, commissioned by Police Commissioner Peter Doone and made by Christchurch Detective Superintendent Jim Millar, has concluded that Mr Eade may have been stressed but was not suffering psychological problems during his investigation.

Peter Ellis was sentenced to 10-years' jail after being convicted of abusing children at the Christchurch Civic Crèche between 1986 and 1992.

Since then an appeal to the Appeal Court and for bail have been rejected.

A second appeal is before the court.

The police report says that "inopportune" comments to the mother of one of the children could have been made because of stress, as could "adverse" comments made to other senior police officers.

Mr Eade's associations with three women had been social contacts made long after the investigation, with each denying there had been any impropriety on his part.

Ellis supporters' spokesman Winston Wealleans said he was disappointed Mr Doone had appointed someone from Christchurch to do the investigation.

"The fact that Christchurch police were investigating Christchurch police for something on this scale seems quite strange," Mr Wealleans said.

"In other cases they have brought in someone of high rank from outside . . . Doone's invited criticism of himself."

Mr Wealleans said Ellis was not aware of the report finding last night but, visited two days ago, had been "of good heart".
