Ellis parole hearing in March

Peter Ellis is likely to have his case considered by the Parole Board again early next month.

His lawyer, Judith Ablett-Kerr, QC, said last night she had met Ellis and his case was due to be called for the second time in the week ending March 12.

Ellis, 40, is serving a 1O-year sentence on charges of abusing children at the Christchurch Civic Creche. He has maintained his innocence throughout.

Mrs Ablett-Kerr said Ellis would not do anything that implied guilt.

"Any parole that requires an acknowledgement by him that conditions of release are necessary for the safety of any sector of society could not be accepted by him," she said.

It has not been decided whether Ellis will appear before the board in person.

Mrs Ablett-Kerr said that, while Ellis wished to have his freedom, he believed the most important issue was to re-establish his innocence.

"He is adamant that it cannot be freedom at any price," she said.

Ellis turned down the chance to appear at a parole hearing in March last year.
