Ellis due for parole hearing
Convicted child molester Peter Ellis could soon be free, with a parole board
hearing scheduled for Thursday night.
A spokeswoman for Ellis's lawyer, Judith Ablett-Kerr,
said Ms Ablett-Kerr would see Ellis on Thursday
morning to talk about whether he would attend the hearing.
Ellis refused to attend his first parole hearing last year because he did not
want to accept freedom on the basis he was guilty of sexually abusing
children. The case was adjourned for a year.
The spokeswoman said the board had decided Ellis was entitled to have Ms Ablett-Kerr present during the hearing after it refused
him the opportunity last year.
Ellis has been moved to self-care accommodation at Christchurch's Paparua
Prison, known to be where prisoners go before they are freed.
Meanwhile, Christchurch MP Ron Mark said he had spoken to Justice Minister
Tony Ryall about speeding up the processing of a
petition seeking a pardon for Ellis.
The petition, containing new information about the controversial case, was
delivered to the governor-general in November.
The Court of Appeal rejected Ellis's first appeal in September 1994, but a
second appeal has been set down for May.
