Parole Board did not free Potter

Convicted paedophile Bert Potter was freed this week because he had finished his time in jail, not because of a Parole Board decision.

On Thursday, Mauri Pacific leader Tau Henare wrongly blamed the Parole Board for letting Potter out of jail, saying it had "released a monster".

A board spokesman said later that Potter had served two-thirds of his sentence, so under the Criminal Justice Act he had reached his final date to be freed.

"The Parole Board's only role in this situation is to determine the nature and duration of conditions that will apply following release from prison." It had considered Potter's parole application four times, but parole was declined on every occasion.

The spokesman said it was silly of Mr Henare to compare Potter's freeing with the denial of parole for convicted child molester Peter Ellis.

Ellis will not have served two- thirds of his jail sentence till February.

Potter, Auckland's Centrepoint commune leader, was given a nine-year sentence for child-sex and drug offences.
