Parallels with Thomas case
Letter to the Editor
by Bryan Helm, Paremata

THE dismissal of the latest appeal against the conviction of Christchurch creche accused Peter Ellis has some similarity to the Arthur Allan Thomas case.

In both instances there seemed to be a reluctance within the courts system to overturn a guilty verdict arrived at in a previous court even though there was strong doubt that justice had been done.

Thomas was fortunate in that an authority outside the court system reviewed the matter and accepted that he had been wrongly convicted. This has so far been denied Ellis.

There is a strong public perception that there were major flaws in the collection and presentation of evidence at his trial. In order that there be full confidence in the judicial system it is important that there be a royal commission into the evidence that led to his conviction.
