Convicted pedophile Peter Ellis
will be released from prison on February 2. Ellis's counsel, Judith Ablett
Kerr, QC, gave the date yesterday, saying it was the mandatory date for his
release. "He has consistently declined
the opportunity for early release on the basis that he could only be released
early if he accepted conditions that were inconsistent with his claim of
innocence," Mrs Ablett Kerr said. The Parole Board had indicated
Ellis would be subject to special conditions on his release after serving
nearly seven years of a 10-year sentence for the sexual abuse of children at the
Christchurch Civic Child Care Centre. Mrs Ablett Kerr said Ellis would
not sign any document that required him to agree to conditions that presumed
him to have been rightfully convicted. She would continue to press for
early consideration by the new Minister of Justice, Phil Goff, of Ellis's
third application for a pardon. |
