Report out today on Ellis case
by Sally Rae
Peter Ellis will
be in Dunedin today with his counsel Judith
Ablett Kerr QC to receive the report of the
ministerial inquiry into his case.
Last week, Justice Minister Phil Goff confirmed he had seen the report, which
would be publicly released this week. The report was expected to be released
today.
It was anticipated a response to the report would be made today, Mrs Ablett
Kerr's office said yesterday.
Debate has raged over the case since Ellis' conviction in 1993 on charges of
sexually abusing children in his care at the Christchurch Civic Creche.
Ellis was released in February last year and Mr Goff announced the
ministerial inquiry a month later.
Lynley Hood's
long-awaited book about the controversial case will be published by
Dunedin-based publisher Longacre Press.
A City Possessed is
the result of more than seven years research by the award-winning Dunedin author. It will
be released later this year.
The book not only details the court case, but also lays out the events and
debates which surrounded and preceded the case.
The book was originally going to be published by Canterbury University Press
but the contract was terminated in November last year. The publisher said Ms
Hood's manuscript exceeded the length stipulated in her contract and she
would not agree to cuts.
Yesterday, Longacre's managing editor, Barbara Larson, said Longacre had
accepted the manuscript in its entirety.
Ms Hood's books include Minnie Dean, Her Life and Crimes, and Sylvia, a
biography of Sylvia Ashton-Warner.
