Book on Ellis case
Letter to the
Editor
by A J Lemm, Queenstown
Congratulations must go to Lynley Hood on being the overall winner of
the Montana book award with A City
Possessed, which covers the conviction of Peter Ellis in the Christchurch
Civic Crèche case.
This book details how this fiasco came about and gives an insight into those
involved. A few basic facts emerge; no factual evidence has ever been
submitted as to Peter Ellis' guilt. The only evidence that has ever been
given was of young children on carefully selected video tapes and their
credibility could not be challenged under cross-examination. No one saw
anything untoward at the crèche yet numerous people came and went.
Having read many of the reviews on the case, no one has refuted the book's
contents. Also many eminent legal authorities endorsed the findings. The time
has come for a full commission of inquiry on the subject.
Since the book was published, the Minister of Justice Phil Goff has taken a
head-in-the-sand attitude and keeps fudging facts. Regardless of the
implications of fallout, which will be immense, justice is the overriding
factor. The only way the matter can be resolved is in truth and action by the
Government.
With the election days away, perhaps people will consider justice that is not
contaminated rather than corncobs.
