Watson documentary
Letter to
the Editor
by Jeanette Robins, New Plymouth
I watched with fascination and horror the recently aired documentary, Murder
on the Blade. As always, there must be two sides to every story, but the
details contained were compelling and, having already witnessed the
travesties and injustices made public by the Peter Ellis debacle and the
Stephen Bain controversy, it ought to be enough to send a cold shiver up
everyone's spine.
Do not be fooled into thinking that age, gender, race or social standing will
somehow give you immunity. If what we are told is only partly true, then your
fate is in the hands of the gods and you are seen to be guilty until proven
innocent.
I was raised to respect authority figures, especially the local bobbies on
the beat. Those days are but a distant memory. Government resourcing is all
about outcomes and it appears our police force is not above manipulating
everything to suit its own ends, regardless of the collateral damage
subsequently caused.
After watching the Watson documentary, reading Lynley Hood's book about the
Christchurch creche case, and Joe Karam's about the Bain case, I am left with
a real sense of sadness - but, greater than that, a real sense of fear.
