Colman gives books to MPs in creche case
Media magnate Barry Colman has played Santa Claus
for MPs investigating the Christchurch Civic Creche case.
Mr Colman this week bought 11 copies of creche book A City Possessed for members of Parliament's justice and
electoral select committee.
The book, by Dunedin
author Lynley Hood, was the catalyst for a high-profile petition calling for
a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the child abuse convictions of former
creche worker Peter Ellis.
However no parliamentary budget was available to buy copies for the
committee, which will recommend whether or not an inquiry should be held.
Mr Colman said it was crucial for the MPs to understand the full extent of
the creche case.
"I'm only too happy to donate the books for them to read. This is a
material way we can assist their decision-making."
The committee begins hearing submissions from Ms Hood and the Ministry of
Justice on December 10.
