Christchurch: A prominent Canterbury man has been committed to the High Court for trial on allegations of sexual abuse dating back up to 38 years.

Christchurch District Court Judge John Bisphan has ordered that almost blanket suppression on the case will continue.

The media is not permitted to publish the man’s name, his age, and all references to his occupation or business. Various other specified details and sections of evidence have also been suppressed.

Judge Bisphan heard depositions in the case on January 29, but reserved his decision on a legal question relating to the hearing.

He gave that ruling yesterday and then remanded the man on bail to a pre-trial conference in the High Court at Christchurch on April 20.

The woman is alleging that sexual abuse took place from the time she was aged about 7, through to the age of 16.

The man faces charges of sexual violation, two of indecent assault on a girl aged under 12, one of indecent assault on the same girl aged 12 to 16, and three charges of raping the girl when she was aged 12 to 16.
