Newstalk ZB The victim in a High Court trial
in Christchurch relating to 15 sex offences more than 30 years ago, once
looked up to the alleged offender like a father. The charges, including rape,
indecent assault and sodomy are alleged to have been carried out between 1967
and 1978. The victim was 8 years-old when the alleged offending first began. The prominent Cantabrian man
standing trial cannot be named. The trial has heard he was a close family
friend who became known to the victim when he began his alleged offending at
the woman's family hotel in Christchurch. On a number of occasions the woman
broke down in tears as she told the court how she saw the defendant as a
father figure, and felt trapped after he told her the truth would destroy her
family. The trial continues. |
