Name suppression bid dropped over 1960s and 70s sex charges

A prominent Canterbury businessman found guilty of child sex charges arising from the 1960s and 1970s has dropped his bid for name suppression.

He is Peter Maxwell Stewart, husband of New Zealand Fashion Week founder Pieter Stewart and son of the recently deceased Sir Robertson Stewart, who founded one of New Zealand's leading electrical companies, PDL Industries.

Earlier this month Stewart, 62, was found guilty of seven charges of child sex abuse committed more than 30 years ago, including the indecent assault, rape and sodomy of a woman who is now in her 40s.

He was found not guilty of four other rape allegations.

Stewart will be sentenced in February.
