Prison sentence for sex abuse 30 years ago

A prominent Canterbury man has been jailed for three and a half years for sexual abuse against a young girl, including rape and sodomy.

Peter Maxwell Stewart, 63, is the husband of the New Zealand Fashion Week founder, Pieter Stewart, and the son of Sir Robertson Stewart, who founded the electrical company, PDL Industries.

Late last year, he was found guilty on seven charges of sexual abuse which occurred more than 30 years ago when the complainant was aged between eight and 14 years.

In sentencing, Justice Panckhurst said Stewart was a first offender and had made a significant contribution to his community.

But he said the girl's age and vulnerability were aggravating features and the offending had caused her huge emotional harm.

Stewart's lawyer says his client maintains he's innocent and will appeal the convictions.
