The Rich List: Stewart family
MANUFACTURING : $250 million

It's been a mixed year for the Stewart clan with business success tinged with sadness.

Champion of industry, Sir Robertson Stewart, was farewelled by hundreds of people in Christchurch's Anglican Cathedral last August just shy of his 94th birthday.

His Mustang car, an expression of his competitiveness and passion for classic car racing was parked outside.

Sir Robertson built plastics and electrical manufacturing firm PDL into one of Christchurch's biggest companies and sold it to French firm Schneider Electric in 2001 for $97 million.

The money provided the foundation of the family's fortune, which is now administered by younger son Mark who heeds the advice of Sir Robertson's widow, arts patron Adrienne, Lady Stewart.

The family's investment company, Masthead, is involved in a series of share market plays via Masthead Investments, currently in a bid for Wakefield Health.

The Stewart children from two wives have their own separate interests.

Eldest son, Robert, owns manufacturer Skope Industries, where his sons Guy and Todd work.

Sir Robertson's second eldest son Peter, 62, was recently sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail for historic sex abuse charges and has vowed to appeal but is likely to have served the minimum time required by the time his appeal comes up.
