Former league star under suspicion for alleged rape

A former rugby league international is under investigation for the alleged drug rape of an Auckland woman.

Auckland police confirmed they have received a complaint and were investigating, but refused to name the former Kiwis player, who also used to play for the Warriors.

The Sunday Star-Times will not name the player for legal reasons, but understands the woman suspected she had been drugged and raped, and had a DNA test taken the morning after the alleged incident.

League players have been linked with several alleged assaults against women in recent years.

In June, former Warrior Tevita Latu was sentenced to eight months' periodic detention after breaking a woman's nose. There was a major investigation into Bulldogs players three years ago after a woman alleged she was sexually assaulted at a Coffs Harbour hotel. No charges were laid. And Newcastle Knights players were accused of going on a drunken rampage through a university dormitory last year, allegedly assaulting one female student.
