Former league player on rape charge

An Auckland District Court judge has refused to reveal the identity of a former rugby league star accused of rape.

The man, who has name suppression, was charged with the three counts of sexual violation, including rape, after an incident in June.

Flanked by family members, the former player made his second appearance in court on Thursday morning. The judge ruled that an interim name suppression order should continue.

But a half day hearing on whether the accused can be identified has been scheduled for next Tuesday.

The man's lawyer Gary Gotlieb told the court there were compelling reasons for the identity of the man to be kept secret.
