Ex-league star faces rape allegations

A former rugby league star facing rape allegations is fighting to keep his name out of the public arena.

The man, 41, has appeared in the Auckland District Court twice this week on three sex violation charges stemming from a woman's allegations.

The former international has won interim suppression orders prohibiting his identification until a hearing on Tuesday.

"Compelling reasons" for suppression would be presented then, his lawyer Gary Gotlieb yesterday told the court, and witnesses would be called to give evidence.

Anyone facing criminal charges can apply for name suppression, but they must show exceptional reasons because court proceedings are supposed to be open to public scrutiny.
