Former Kiwis star committed to stand trial

A former rugby league star has been committed to stand trial for the alleged rape and sexual violation of a woman he met at an Auckland bar last year.

The ex-Kiwis player, who has name suppression, denies the charges and says the sex was consensual.

A depositions hearing has heard the complainant and her friends were snorting cocaine and drinking alcohol before the alleged attack. The woman had met the defendant at a popular bar on Auckland's fashionable Ponsonby Road. She later told an examining doctor they had kissed and had rough sex in the back of a car, but she had never wanted it to get like that.

The doctor admitted the woman's injuries, including bleeding and bruising, could sometimes be the result of a consensual act.
