Former league star denies rape

The former rugby league star accused of raping a woman he picked up at an Auckland bar says the only person he hurt was his wife.

The ex-Kiwi player, who has name suppression, has been committed to stand trial on three counts of sexual violation.

In a statement given to police after he was arrested last August, the man said he met the complainant and fooled around with her while in the backroom of a Ponsonby Road bar. He says while security stills appear to show the pair having intercourse, they were only being silly and clowning around. He says they later drove to a nearby park and may have had oral sex in the back seat of his car.

He says when he refused to drive the woman home she started sulking, but he never expected her to cry rape.
