Former league star to stand trial

A former Kiwi league star who cannot be named is to stand trial for rape and three counts of sexual violation.

A woman claims she met the accused while drinking at an Auckland bar in June 2006.

The court heard she had been drinking wine all night and had taken cocaine before the alleged attack.

The accused has denied all charges and says the only person he hurt was his wife.

In a statement given to police after he was arrested last August, the man said he met the complainant and fooled around with her while in the back room of a Ponsonby Road bar.

He says while security stills appear to show the pair having intercourse, they were only being silly and clowning around.

He says they later drove to a nearby park and may have had oral sex in the back seat of his car.

When he refused to drive the woman home she started sulking, but he says he never expected her to cry rape.
