Former league player denies raping woman

An Auckland court has heard that a former rugby league player denies raping a woman.

He has been ordered to stand trial on sex charges. The man, who has name suppression, faces three counts of sexual violation, including rape.

After a two-day deposition hearing at Auckland District Court he has been committed to trial and is due to reappear in the High Court in Auckland in May.

The court heard the complainant was heavily intoxicated when she met the accused in a bar last June in Ponsonby, Auckland.

She later found herself in a car on College Hill where the prosecution says she was raped and sexually violated.

In a written statement, the accused said the pair ended up in his car parked near Victoria Park but said at no point was he rough or aggressive with her and he denies having sex with her.

The man has been committed to trial and is due to reappear in the High Court in Auckland in May.
