The trial has begun in Auckland of
a former policeman who is facing rape charges. The former policeman's name and
the name of his victim have been suppressed. He is charged with the rape of a
woman in Northland almost 20 years ago. The accused faces a total of eight
charges including rape, assault and unlawful sexual connection, which refer
back to an alleged incident in the Far North in 1988. A police investigation was
reopened in 2004. A jury of seven women and five men
was selected on Monday morning. Judge Lance told the potential
jurors he realises there has been a lot of media coverage of police conduct
in the 1980s and if they cannot be impartial they should discharge themselves
from the jury.
