Defence opens case over rape claims

The defence for a former police officer charged with rape has opened its case.

The former Far North officer is on trial in Auckland, accused of rape, assault and sexual violation dating back to 1988.

Defence lawyer Gary Gotlieb says he will call five witnesses to defend his client. They include police who used to work with the accused, a man he claims the complainant came onto the night of the incident and a man she had an affair with.

The accused will not be taking the stand. The defence expects to finish its evidence today.
