The prosecution and defence have
finished giving evidence at the case of a former Northland police officer
charged with rape, sexual violation and assault. The man, who has name suppression,
is accused of luring a woman back to the police station where he worked in
1988 before raping her. The defence for the man opened its
case today, and called five witnesses. Tomorrow the prosecution, defence and
the judge will sum up before the jury is sent out to consider its verdict. The crown alleges the man tricked
the woman out of her car by saying she had faulty headlights before
handcuffing her and raping her. However the defence says the sex was entirely
consensual
