Jury deliberates in far north police trial

The jury has begun its deliberations in the case of a former far north police officer charged with rape.

The man, who has name suppression, is accused of rape, sexual violation and assault dating back 18 years.

In summing up Judge Michael Lance told the jurors it is up to them to decide how reliable and credible the witnesses have been. He says the incident happened a long time ago and some witnesses may have trouble recalling that night in 1988.

Judge Lance says the jury should not take the approach of who to approve of, but rather to look at each of the seven charges separately. He says the jury must be sure beyond reasonable doubt that the complainant did not consent to the sex.
