Crown gives closing address in police historic rape case

The Crown has told the jury in an historic rape trial that the truth is as clear now as it was nearly 20 years ago.

A 47-year old former Far North constable is on trial at the Auckland Distruict Court facing 7 charges, including 3 of rape.

In his closing address, the Crown Prosecutor Glen Marshall told the court that the defence case relies on a statement the accused gave to police several months after the alleged rape in 1988.

Mr Marshall told the jury to read it and they will then know who is telling the truth.

He told the jury that the defendant's story of consensual sex is pure fantasy, and questioned whether it is the statement of an honest policeman or a person telling half truths or lies.

On the other hand, he said the complainant, who claims she was handcuffed and raped several times in a police station, speaks the truth loud and clear after 18 years
