PD for wasting police time

A woman who wasted more than 100 hours of police time by falsely claiming she was mugged was sentenced to three months' periodic detention when she appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday.

On November 22, Daphne Elizabeth Georg Broughton, 44, told police she had been assaulted in Montgomery Square, Nelson and had money stolen. She described her attacker as a young caucasian man.

Six days later, she admitted she had made up the allegations because she had money problems and didn't want her husband to know she had gambled $350 in a local bar.

Police estimated they spent more than 100 hours investigating the false complaint.
